The Heart of Jack Crawford: A Shrine to Unsung Heroes, my solo exhibition of recent ceramic pieces, will open on Saturday 14th May PM in the Gallery of Wonder cabinet at the Great North Museum: Hancock. The venue is also taking part in The Late Shows. The show ends on 10th June.

A Journey in Glass and Ceramics”
Emerging Artists from the University of Sunderland 2011

“A Journey in Glass and Ceramics” is an innovative exhibition on display at the Bede’s World Museum in Jarrow from 26th March 2011, which showcasing the work of MA and PhD student studying glass and ceramics programmes at the University of Sunderland – National Glass Centre.
The exhibition is organized in partnership between the University of Sunderland and Bede’s World, drew its inspiration from the museum and the surrounding landscape, to create a series of pieces which highlight traditional craft and contemporary art ideas in glass and ceramics. The exhibition also provided a platform for the students to present their own interpretation of the site, as well as develop a greater understanding about extraordinary life of the Venerable Bede (AD673-735) whose influences still remain today.
Internationally renowned expert and writer on glass Prof. Sylva Petrova who curated the exhibition stated:
The show introduces the works of 17 artists from the UK, China, Sweden and Korea. Although many of the students are still in relatively early stages of their careers the pieces show a high level of professionalism and the artistic output. The diverse range of ideas and conceptions featured throughout the exhibition, are based on the student’s ability to use glass and ceramic as material in service of origin artistic expressions. Many pieces presented in the Bede’s World are specially designed for the situ and are in visual or spiritual correspondence with the architecture, cultural significance of the place and its message. The use word ‘journey’ in the exhibition title symbolizes not only our lives or the Venerable Bede’s life and works. The title wants to point out, that these artists are “on the road” of their artistic carriers, on the “road” to win their future in the world of art and academia as well.
The Glass and Ceramics studio – National Glass Centre of the Faculty of Art and Design the University of Sunderland has very special position among departments teaching glass and ceramics in the UK and Europe. The studio has the highest number of PhD students among glass and ceramics education centers in the UK. It is the largest unit in the UK with an extraordinarily high level of equipment, including one of the largest kilns in the world for casting glass and also a water-jet cutter.
Throughout its 30 years of history, staff, BA, MA, PHD students and visiting artists from a number of foreign countries have focused upon the development of glass and ceramics as an art form. This has positioned the University of Sunderland as one of the most significant providers of glass education, training and research in the UK. Many of the graduates associated with glass and ceramic studies are now significant artists, designers and tutors in Europe, Australia, the United States and elsewhere, having gained a reputation in their subject at national and international level.

The exhibition will commence on Saturday 26 March through to Thurs 4th May inclusive.

3月11日（金）に発生した東日本大地震により亡くなられた方々の
ご冥福をお祈り申し上げますとともに、被災された皆様、その
ご家族の方々に対しまして、心よりお見舞い申し上げます。

一日も早い復旧復興をお祈り申し上げます。

地震や津波によって被害を受けた地域の壮絶な状況や安否確認の
情報が連日流され、また、福島第一原子力発電所の状況、電力不足、
度々発生する余震とまだまだ安心できない状況が続いております。

この現状に対して、「アートで国境や宗教、民族、人種を越える！そして、繋ぐ！」
というテーマのPUZZLE PROJECTとしても何かできないかと検討しました。

期しくも現在、PUZZLE PROJECTは関西国際空港で[PUZZLE PROJECT in KIX]
として開催しておりますが当会場では作品の販売等は出来ないので急遽、
ウーニーポンポンカウカウにある、これまでのPUZZLE PROJECTの作品
などを展示することとしました。
本展覧会での収益は日本赤十字社を通して東日本大地震の被災者のための
義援金として寄付させていただきます。

[PUZZLE PROJECT]

PUZZLE PROJECTは大阪府が実施する『おおさかカンヴァス推進事業』の制作作品に選ばれました。
今回の展示予定会場は関西国際空港(KIX)です。

2006年に大阪で始まり, ロンドン（2008年）, トロント（2010年）で開催したPUZZLE PROJECTが2011年, 正に海外から帰国したかのように関西国際空港で開催！

「アートで国境や宗教, 民族, 人種を越える！そして, 繋ぐ！」というコンセプトのPUZZLE PROJECTにとって国際空港は正にぴったりな開催地といえます！
そして今回はかなり大規模になります。今までのPUZZLE PROJECTの4倍以上のピースを展示する予定です。

Nail your colours to the mast!

This medal commemorates the life of Jack Crawford, Sunderland-born hero of the Battle of Camperdown (1797), who risked his life to nail Admiral Duncan’s colours to the mast of the flagship Venerable after the Dutch shot them away no less than 6 times. My current research explores how an artist might use the Sunderland Museum’s 19th Century Sunderland Ware pottery collection as a tool to engage the local community for mutual benefit. The pottery is famous for its pink lustre glazes and transfer-printed imagery often depicting maritime scenes, with Jack Crawford’s exploits being a common topic. During research at the Museum, I discovered that it had, at one point, accessioned into its collection, ‘the heart of Jack Crawford’. This artefact has since been lost and it is impossible to tell whether or not it really was Jack Crawford’s heart. However, the story captured my imagination and inspired me to make a modern day bravery medal which featured an effigy of Jack Crawford’s heart together with the idiom, “Nail your colours to the mast”. It is hoped that this tribute to Jack Crawford will have contemporary resonances, particularly in these uncertain times when many men and women from the North East are serving their country in conflicts abroad.

The medal was initially carved in wood and a plaster cast was then taken for porcelain slip casting. When fired, porcelain shrinks by up to twenty per cent and it was necessary to make the original slightly bigger to take account of this. The size of the medal reflects the size of the original silver medal awarded to Jack Crawford which is on display in the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. The medal format offered an unparalleled opportunity to explore scale, three dimensional form and surface decoration through ceramic transfer printing. Carving the original in wood also confers to the finished piece a casual ‘folk art’ feel which simultaneously pays homage to and mildly challenges the traditional medal format.

Ginko Fine Art will be appearing at the EDF Ideal Home Show from 20th March to 13th April, 2009. We will be displaying a selection of fine art and interior gifts including decorative panels by Takaya Hirai, ceramic robots by Kenji Naka and drypoint etchings by Yukiko Inagaki. Christopher McHugh will be displaying his Shoal installation and associated printmaking. He has also developed a special tenugui design in collaboration with Osaka-based chusen dyeing factory, Nakani Company Limited, who will also be present.

Puzzle Project comes to London!

Puzzle Project 2008 - Osaka and London

Puzzle project comes to the UK!

Started in 2005 in Osaka, the Puzzle Project is taking place again this year in Osaka at Artists Space CERO and in London at the Willesden Green Art Centre. Puzzle Project is managed by Osaka-based artists, Takashi Inaba and Atsushi Takamatsu. The project began in 2005 and it is intended that it should run annually in various venues in Japan and abroad. Ginko Fine Art artist, Christopher McHugh, took part in the 2006 event which was held in Osaka at the two galleries of UniPon2Kau2 and Chef d'Ouvre between February and March, 2006.

The central theme of the project is international exchange and last year's event attracted about 70 artists. Although the majority of these were from Japan and Korea, the USA, UK, Sweden and other countries were also represented. The idea is that the Puzzle should continue to grow and be an ever-evolving piece of art, bringing together a disparate range of artists, working in a variety of media. The 2006 project incorporated printmakers, photographers, calligraphers, painters and sculptors, amongst others.

This year, the Project will be held in Osaka at Artist Space CERO from 8th until 20th September and will come to the Wall Gallery at the Willesden Green Art Centre, London, from 20th October until 12th November.

Special guest, Valerie Whitfield, President of the Durham Chapter of Ikebana International, explained the history, rules and styles of Ikebana and demonstrated arrangements from the Sogetsu School of Ikebana.

クリストファー・マキュー個展

Ginko Fine Art artist, Christopher McHugh, exhibited SHOAL, a solo exhibition of etchings and mixed media work at UniPon2Kau2 Art Project Space, Osaka, Japan, in March 2008. The centre piece of the exhibition was an installation of about 27 carved wooded fish, based on his earlier "Shoal" series of etchings, also displayed. Driftwood Book, together with five examples from his Fossil Box series were also shown.
